Human in the Loop: Why Oversight Keeps AI Human

The best AI workflow is not the one that removes every person. It is the one that makes the right human decision easier and more visible.

Automation needs a stopping point

AI can draft, sort, summarise and suggest. It can also misunderstand context, reproduce errors or sound more certain than it should. A human-in-the-loop design gives the system a clear boundary.

Three questions to define the boundary

  1. What may the system prepare without approval?
  2. What must a person check before it is sent or acted on?
  3. What happens when the information is incomplete or the system is uncertain?

Oversight is part of the design

Human review should not be an afterthought. Give the reviewer the context they need, make the draft easy to check and record who is responsible for the final decision.

This matters most when a workflow touches money, access, health, safeguarding, employment, customer complaints or personal data.

Build support, not dependence

Good training helps a team understand what an AI system is doing, what it cannot know and when to stop using it. That is how automation earns trust.
